Little Kids Traveling: Four Great Caribbean Resorts For Families

by Charlotte A.F. Farley

If you remember being a kid—and who doesn’t—you know that just to be on vacation and be away from the everyday humdrum of home could be thrilling enough. Throw in some water, sand, and a pool, and you were set.

Throw in a tropical location and that really upped the ante.

Some of the best family vacations we ever took when I was a child were in the Caribbean.  Now that I’m a parent, I have a new appreciation for my own—they braved flights and countries with three elementary school kids! Actually, I take it back:  the youngest still required bottles, diapers, and a crib during these trips to the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands.

It’s lucky for us that times have changed. Many modern resorts not only offer splendid accommodations for families with kids travelling to the Caribbean, but they are seriously competing for the business from this market.

That only makes things better for the newest and youngest crew to visit the Caribbean.  Read on to find out which spots are the best places to bring your family for a Caribbean getaway.

The Best Shopping The Caribbean Has To Offer

The Best Shopping The Caribbean Has To Offer

by Charlotte A.F. Farley

I’m a New Yorker, born and bred.  I grew up a mere twenty-five miles away from the heart of midtown Manhattan, and baby, let me tell you:  there is really no better shopping in the U.S.

There is, however, some great shopping to conquer down Caribbean way.

I have openly admitted right here in the beauty that is caribbeanup.com that my ideal Caribbean vacation has nothing to do with grand outdoor or underwater adventures; no sir, the beach and a mixed drink with a spa thrown in make it for me.

Until you mention the word shopping.

You had me at hello? No way—you had me at duty free.

Shopping in the Caribbean gives a whole new definition to open-air mall, kids.

It’s beautiful, magical, cultural, and best of all—you won’t find these items back home.

Read on to find out more about the best shopping the Caribbean has to offer.

Having An Awesome Caribbean Vacation On A Budget

by Charlotte A.F. Farley

If you’re reading this article, it tells me three things:

1.    You’re a planner.
2.    You’re thrifty.
3.    You need some serious help.
(Planning a budget Caribbean vacation, that is.)

In case you were wondering, yes, it is totally possible to have an awesome Caribbean vacation without breaking your piggy bank.  Really. You need to trust me on this one.  You might need to give up your dream of swimming out to your private infinity pool after a butler served you a personalized menu en suite, but hey. Sacrifices, right?

Here are my handy-dandy tips on how to enjoy a vacation on a Caribbean island without going broke.

Caribbean Cooking - the Origins

Caribbean Cooking - the Origins

Who would think that a mere plant could cause so much trouble? The nutmeg tree, with its glossy brown fruit and lacy scarlet mace, looks much too innocent to do any harm, but there was a time when nutmeg probably caused as much bloodshed as gold or silver.

NutmegSix hundred years ago the source of nutmeg was a highly guarded secret. Muslim traders knew the spice only came from the Banda Islands, a small group of islands in Indonesia, but Europeans were unable to discover its origin. The desperate attempts of Spain, Portugal, France, Holland, and England to gain access to spice resulted in a series of daring—or foolhardy--sea adventures, including the voyage of Columbus to the New World. The Dutch eventually seized the poor little Banda Islands, and in 1621 most of the Bandanese were massacred. The Dutch rigidly controlled the world supply of nutmeg, even destroying crops to keep the price high. In 1810, the British temporarily took possession of the islands and transported as many nutmeg trees as they could to other British possessions. So it was that nutmeg finally made its way to the Caribbean. Now Grenada—which has more spices per square mile than any place else on earth—is thick with nutmeg trees. In fact, nutmeg is on the Grenadian flag.

The 6 Best Adults-Only Caribbean Resorts

The 6 Best Adults-Only Caribbean Resorts

By Charlotte A.F. Farley

When I was younger and immature, the phrase “adults-only” always sounded wrong on some level; it had some sort of dirty implication.

When I was in my early twenties, “adults-only” indicated that there would definitely be drinking at this locale.

Now that I’m a parent, “adults-only” means peace, quiet, and relaxation.

Whatever the term means to you, if you are looking for a facility that caters only to the grown-up crowd, there are a few things to bear in mind.

First, are you looking for an all-inclusive or not?  While every resort comes with its fair share of amenities, not all of them wrap your meals up in their price.

You will want to note the difference between adults only and couples only. As it stands, most places that bill themselves as adults-only welcome groups, singles, and families (as long as the youngest traveler is over the age of 18).  While they offer plenty to those interested in a romantic getaway, they don’t necessarily always cater to that crowd.

The last item to consider: is this an independent property or is it a member of some larger complex? Traditionally , independent properties don’t offer as much in the way of extra-curriculars, but they do guarantee you won’t be seeing any munchkins with Dora the Explorer sand buckets in toe.  If the hotel grants access to its sister facilities, you won’t necessarily have a completely, 100% adults-only experience.

In no particular order, here are the best adults-only facilities in the Caribbean:

The Best Resorts in The Caribbean For Singles

By Charlotte A.F. Farley

Sometimes it seems that the best resorts in the Caribbean cater to honeymooners.  Au contraire, my friend.  The Caribbean does not discriminate.  In fact, travel options for singles are more plentiful than ever—gone are the days when singles travel conjures images of wild college spring breakers.  If you want to meet new friends, there’s a place for you.  If you want to feel safe while traveling alone and exploring new places, you can.  And if you want to find love—or just some rendezvous—there are definite opportunities waiting for you in the Caribbean.
